Scholarships
The American Legion, Department of Florida offers many scholarship opportunities for High School Students, which are focused on Veteran and Military influences.
High School Scholarship Opportunities
General Scholarship
1st Place | $2,500
2nd Place | $1,500
3rd Place |$1,000
4th – 7th Place | $500
Eligibility:
- Student must be a direct descendant (child, grandchild, great-grandchild or an adopted child) of a veteran who meets one of the following requirements:
- Is a member in good standing of the American Legion
- Is a U.S. veteran who is eligible to be a member of The American Legion
- Is a deceased U.S. veteran who would have been eligible for membership in The American Legion
- Student must be in his or her senior year and attending a Florida high school, parents must be Florida residents.
Deadline:
March 1st of current school year
Baseball Scholarship
1st Place | $1,000
2nd Place | $500
The First Place winner will be entered into the National Competition for a chance to be named to The American Legion All Academic Team with a top scholarship of $5,000 or one of eight $2,500 scholarships.
Eligibility:
- Must be in senior year of high school or have graduated high school.
- Be on current roster filed with National Headquarters.
- Be part of a team affiliated with an American Legion Post
Deadline:
July 15th of current school year
JROTC Cadet of the Year
1st Place | $2,500
2nd Place | $1,500
3rd Place | $1,000
4th Place | $500
Eligibility:
- Cadet must be enrolled in Florida high school and member of Air Force, Army, Marine, Navy or Coast Guard JROTC
- Parents must be Florida residents
- Cadet must be in senior year of school
- Only one student from each high school JROTC unit will be accepted. The Senior Military Instructor is responsible for choosing the cadet to receive the application.

March 1st of Current school year
Junior Shooting Sports
This scholarship is for those that participated in the American Legion National Shooting Sports Program.
- Sporter & Precision Individual State Winners – $500
- Additional $500 if winner advances to the Qualification Round
- Sporter & Precision Team State Winners – $500
Eligibility:
Must be member of JROTC shooting team who is registered with the Junior Shooting Program at The American Legion National Headquarters.
Deadline:
January 1 of current school year.
High School State Oratorical Contest
1st Place | $2,500
2nd Place | $1,500
3rd Pace | $1,000
4th through 6th Place | $500
Eligibility:
Student must be enrolled in state accredited high school program in grades 9-12. Parents must be Florida residents. This is a speech contest, for more information click here
Application:
No application necessary. Contact your local American Legion Post to enter or Department Headquarters
Deadline:
December 1 of the current school year.
Eagle Scout of the Year
The American Legion, Department of Florida offers annual scholarships to outstanding Eagle Scouts as follows:
1st Place | $2,500 scholarship
2nd Place | $1,500 scholarship
3rd Place | $ 1,000 scholarship
4th Place | $ 500 scholarship
The Florida 1st Place winner’s application will be sent to the American Legion National Headquarters for consideration for an additional $10,000 national scholarship.
Eligibility
“The nominee must have earned the Eagle Scout Award, any religious emblem (Cub or Scout), must be a currently enrolled High School student, must be a Florida resident, must either be in a Troop or Crew chartered by an American Legion Post or the child or grandchild of a Legion, Auxiliary, or Sons of The American Legion Member or a parent eligible to join The American Legion Department of Florida. Eagle Scouts may apply each year for which they maintain the above eligibility.”

College Scholarship Opportunities
Medical School
First Place – One scholarship award of $2,750
A candidate must be:
- A U.S. Citizen or permanent Florida resident
- A student in an accredited Florida Medical School/Program
