About
Mission & Purpose
The American Legion is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization with great political influence perpetuated by its grass-roots involvement in the legislation process from local districts to Capitol Hill.
History
Congress chartered The American Legion in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Focusing on service to veterans, service members and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States.
The Legion Family
For nearly a century, The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of The American Legion have worked steadfastly, side-by-side, promoting patriotism and national security while supporting youth and advocating for veterans and active-duty military personnel and families.
