The American Legion is an organization of Veterans helping Veterans. We have many programs that we provide as an organization, but we also have many partnerships with other organizations. Taking care of and advocating for our Veterans is a team effort. Below are a few resources that are preferred by many veterans:
Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes
For the thousands of seriously wounded veterans in Afghanistan and Iraq, the struggle to overcome the challenges in their lives caused by the injuries and illnesses they sustained in combat is one that must be endured every day. The Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes was established to ensure that in return for the sacrifices they made for us, these wounded veterans and their families receive all the support needed to restore their hope and rebuild their lives.
Continuing Education Resources for Veterans
Sixty-four post-secondary institutions in Florida offer online programs. Of these accredited online colleges, 14 are public four-year colleges or universities and five are public community or technical colleges; and 45 are private colleges, universities, or career and vocational schools. The degrees offered at these schools include 1,117 online certificate programs, 6,152 online associate programs, 7,548 online bachelor’s programs, 3,974 online master’s programs, 5,026 online professional programs, and 1,052 online doctoral programs. Chemical engineering, mental health, and hotel management are examples of subjects offered by these programs.

Florida Department of Health
Florida offers expedited licensure processing if you are a member, or the spouse of a member, of the United States Armed Forces, the United States Reserve Force, or the National Guard seeking licensure in a health care profession.
Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs (FDVA)
In 1988, Florida citizens endorsed a constitutional amendment to create the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs as a separate agency charged with providing advocacy and representation for Florida’s veterans and to intercede on their behalf with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Our advocacy increases federal benefits for Florida’s veterans, improves the quality of life for veterans with service-connected disabilities, and provides access to federally funded medical care for eligible veterans.
Florida Veterans Foundation
As a Direct Support Organization, the Foundation is incorporated as a not for profit corporation under Chapter 617, Florida Statutes, to provide assistance, funding and support for the FDVA in carrying out its mission of veterans’ advocacy. The Foundation operates for the direct and indirect benefit of the veterans of Florida, the FDVA, and veteran service organizations.

Legion Insurance Trust
Founded in 1965, the LIT is a not-for-profit Trust comprised of Departments of The American Legion that elect to participate in the programs of the LIT. Today, forty-eight (48) Legion Departments representing some 2.0 million members comprise the LIT. During these years the LIT had returned $99 Million dollars back to the Departments and pays for things that benefit you and your community like renovations to Legion Baseball fields and salaries for VA officers at the VA to assist members with claims.
Make the Connection
Make the Connection is a public awareness campaign by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that provides personal testimonials and resources to help Veterans discover ways to improve their lives. Many of our Nation’s Veterans—from those who served in World War II to those involved in current conflicts—return not only with physical wounds but also mental health issues they may not recognize.

VeteransPlus programs were designed by Veterans and are delivered by Veterans to provide practical financial solutions geared to real life circumstances of current and former military personnel. Their counselors and educators have been where you are and they are dedicated to your success. In the often-confusing atmosphere of stressful financial situations, their Veteran counselors can help break down communication barriers that might exist when Veterans discuss personnel finances with non-Veterans. Upon request, VeteransPlus will substitute spouses and/or family of Veterans to support all situations. All counselors possess the necessary empathy to discuss real life experience with other Veteran and family members from their shared perspective.
