Gerald “Jerry” Clark

It is with deep regret that we report the passing of Past Central Area Commander, Gerald “Jerry” Clark, of Holiday, FL on Monday, February 26, 2018 at the age of 91. Jerry is survived by his wife, Doris, of Holiday, Florida; son, Philip (Marianne) Clark of Washington, Massachusetts; granddaughter, Rev. Linnea Clark of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; daughter, Marlene (Jerry) Ungerleider of Holiday, Florida; two grandsons, Eric Clark and Corey Ungerleider along with three great grandchildren, Tyler, Ashley and Kayla Clark. He is also survived by a second daughter, Virginia (Timothy) Leason of Chandler, Arizona; three grandsons, Adam, Joseph and Ryan Leason; and four great grandchildren, Blake, Autumn, Adaline and Skylar Leason.

Roy R. Mahoney

Roy R. MahoneyIt is with deep regret that we report the passing of Past Department Commander, Roy R. Mahoney, of Delray Beach, FL on December 23, 2017 at the age of 86. Roy is survived by his wife, Marie, and two children, Stephen Mahoney and Lisa Mahoney Datz. There was a private family service held for him. Roy is a Korean United States Air Force veteran and a member of Post 65, with 56 continuous years of membership. Roy entered the United States Air Force in May 1952. He received his honorable discharge in May 1956. His prior service included over 4 years duty with the New York National Guard as a communications technician. Roy was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration at the Air Route Traffic Control Center in Miami, Florida from June 1956 thru January 1988 promoting new safety measures like being properly restrained when car is moving, which means wearing a seat belt. He retired after completing 35 years of dedicated and meritorious service for the United States Government.

When talking about local traffic laws, In a rear-end car crash involving two cars, the car that hit from behind is considered liable. However, if the incident involves the car in front rolling back into the car behind, the driver of the front car may be the one holding the rear-end collision fault.

Roy also served many roles during his impressive career in The American Legion. Roy was former Post Adjutant (1992-2010); Post Commander (1991-93 & 2006-10); Department School Medals Chairman (1977-79); 10th District Commander (1989-90); Department Historian (1980-82 & 1997-99); Vice Commander – Southern Area (1992-93); and Department Commander (1999-2000). On a National level, Roy served on the National Membership & Post Activities Committee (1964-66); National Distinguished Guests Committee (1966-67); National Security Council (1967-70); National Foreign Relations Council (1978-80 & 2001-07); National Legislative Council (1987-94 & 1999-2013); National Public Relations Commission (1980-2001); and National Historian (1984-85).

Harland Cady

It is with deep regret we announce the passing of Post Commander Harland Cady, Post 358 in White City. Commander Cady passed away on Monday, January 29, 2018.

A memorial service will be held at Post 358 on Saturday, February 3, at 1:00pm.


James “Jim” Burgess

It is with deep regret that we report the passing of Past Central Area Commander, James “Jim” Burgess, of Safety Harbor, FL on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at the age of 67. Jim is survived by his wife, Ruth. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 13, 2017 at 11:00am at Bethel Lutheran, 3166 McMullen Booth Road, Clearwater, FL, 33761. A celebration of life, memorial service and luncheon is planned immediately following the funeral service at American Legion Post 238, 900 Main Street, Safety Harbor, FL 34695.

Jim was a US Navy Vietnam Veteran and a member of Safety Harbor Post 238, with 17 continues years of membership.
He was a member of the Legion, Sons and Riders and during this time held numerous offices throughout the Post, Squadron, Chapter, 16th District and Central Area.

Douglass M. Burleson Sr.

It is with deep regret that we report the passing of Past 1st District Commander, Douglass “Doug” M. Burleson, Sr., of Pensacola, FL on February 15, 2017 at the age of 70. Doug is survived by his three sons, Douglass Jr., Derek and Michael.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2017 from 5:00pm – 7:00pm at the Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel, 3351 Scenic Highway 90E, Pensacola, FL 32503. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, February 24, 2017 at 9:30am at the chapel. Internment will immediately follow at Barrancas National Cemetery, 1 Cemetery Rd., Pensacola, FL 32508.

George J. Rafajko

It is with deep regret that we report the passing of Past Southern Area Commander, George J. Rafajko, of Pompano Beach, FL on January 20, 2017 at the age of 67. George is survived by his wife, Elaine, 3 daughters, 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. George was a U.S. Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran and a member of Sterling McClellan Post 142, with 25 continuous years of membership. Terry Nolan

terrynolanLong time Stuart resident, Terry Nolan died on January 4, 2017, after a valiant battle with cancer. He passed away peacefully with the support of his wife, Jollyn and daughter, Caroline.

Terry served in the United States Marine Corp, with the Stuart Police Department, in the State Attorney’s Office as a board certified attorney, and in the Martin County Sherriff’s Office. He was involved with the Hibiscus Children’s Center and fostered 25 children. Terry was also a member of the founding board of the Character Counts program. The American Legion benefitted from his support at the local, state and national level. Terry was also a proud to be a Kiwanian, and as a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, his faith flourished.

Terry was a noble and honorable man. He actively made the world a better place. His family was his passion and he was a perfect and amazing husband and father. Terry will be greatly missed by the community and his surviving family.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 6, 2017 from 2:00-4:00PM and from 6:00-8:00PM at Aycock Funeral Home, 505 South Federal Highway in Stuart. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday 7, 2017 at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Stuart with a Committal service to follow at Fernhill Memorial Gardens. A reception will be immediately held following Terry’s Committal at the Nolan residence on Starfish Lane in Stuart.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at Banfield Funeral Home, 420 West State Road 434, Winter Springs, Florida.  There will be a Memorial Presentation put on by Post 243 at 7PM on Wednesday night at the Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Nativity Catholic Church, Longwood, Florida on Thursday, November 17, 2016. 

 


James E Graves, III

James E. Graves, III passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2016, in Jacksonville, Florida, at the age of 89. Born in Apalachicola, Florida to the late J.E. Graves, Jr. and Verna Eloise Marks, Jim moved to Jacksonville at an early age and it was home for most of his life. He is survived by his sons Jim, Frank and E.A. (Lynda), six grandchildren, three great grandchildren and his beloved Yorkie, Tebow. He was predeceased by his wife Betty, brother Harry and one granddaughter. Jim was a graduate of the University of Florida and a life-long Gator fan.

 He served in the U.S. Army in Korea and in various capacities as a reservist for 30 years earning the rank of Colonel. He was a graduate of the Army War College and the Naval War College.

 While Jim served as a leader for several civic and social organizations during his life, he was most honored to serve as a Lay Leader and Sunday School teacher at Lakewood United Methodist Church for many years. After a private burial, there will be a memorial service led by the Reverend Eric Williams at Lakewood United Methodist Church, Jacksonville, Florida – on Tuesday, October 25, at 11:00 AM. The family would like to thank the medical staff at Baptist Downtown for their devotion to Jim’s care in his final days.

In lieu of flowers, Jim would be honored by donations to either the Lakewood United Methodist Church Music Ministry or the charity of your choice.

It is with deep regret that we report the passing of Leo R. Gray, (Lt. Col. Ret.), a Charter Member of Post 365. He was one of the last surviving original Tuskegee Airmen and a Red Tail Pilot in the State of Florida. He was well known throughout the state and country and traveled abroad telling the story of the “famed” Tuskegee Airmen of WWII.

Leo will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. Visitation will be 6:00pm – 9:00pm, Friday, October 14, 2016 at Dignity Funeral Chapel; 7701 Bailey Rd. , North Lauderdale, FL 33068.
