Joseph E. “Joe” Nolan

With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Past Northern Area Commander Joseph E. “Joe” Nolan of Jacksonville, Florida. Joe passed away on Monday, August 31, 2026, at the age of 83.

Joe is survived by his three sons, David, Matthew, and Justin. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at 2:30 PM at American Legion Post 316, located at 1127 Atlantic Blvd., Atlantic Beach, FL 32233.

Joe proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era and was a devoted member of Atlantic Beach Post 316. He faithfully served The American Legion for 45 continuous years.

Throughout his many years of dedicated service, Joe made a lasting contribution to veterans, his community, and The American Legion. He served as Commander of Ponte Vedra Beach Post 233 from 1993 to 1994 and as Post Adjutant from 1999 to 2002. He served as Department Commander’s Aide to Clarence Hill from 2002 to 2003 and as 5th District Commander from 2003 to 2004. He later served as Northern Area Commander from 2008 to 2009, Commander of Atlantic Beach Post 316 from 2010 to 2011, and Department Internal Affairs Chair from 2016 to 2018. He also served on the Boys State Board from 2019 to 2021 and as Post Chaplain of Atlantic Beach Post 316 from 2020 to 2024. At the national level, Joe served as Vice Chair of The American Legion National Distinguished Guests Committee from 2002 to 2008.
