Posts and Districts across Florida unite to provide supplies, financial assistance, and support to fellow Legionnaires recovering from the October storm.

In the wake of Hurricane Isaias, The American Legion Family throughout Florida is demonstrating the strength of its commitment to mutual helpfulness, coming together to assist Posts and members impacted by the devastating storm.

Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin on October 9, 2026, bringing widespread destruction, power outages, and flooding across portions of the Florida Panhandle and southeastern United States. The storm claimed at least nine lives, including six in Florida, and left numerous communities facing a difficult recovery.

Florida Legion Posts Among Those Hardest Hit

At least 10 American Legion Posts in Florida reported storm-related damage, with several experiencing significant destruction to their facilities.

Among those most severely affected were:

  • Norman A. Garrett Post 78 – Milton: Extensive damage to the Post building.
  • Hanniton Watts Post 93 – Pensacola: Significant structural damage to the Post facility.
  • Post 382 – Navarre: Heavy damage to the Post building.
  • Edeker-Du Bose Post 121 – Jay: Major damage to the Post’s ball field, with numerous members also experiencing prolonged power outages.

Despite these challenges, the Legion Family has wasted no time mobilizing assistance for those in need.

Legion Family Steps Up to Help

Across Florida, American Legion Posts and Districts have organized relief efforts, collecting essential supplies and financial contributions to support their fellow Legionnaires.

According to Department of Florida Disaster Preparedness Chairman Joe Humet, donations have included cleaning supplies, nonperishable food, personal hygiene products, and generators. Financial contributions have also been directed to affected Posts and the Department’s Disaster Relief Fund.

Donated supplies are being coordinated through American Legion Post 230 in Hawthorne, which is serving as a central collection and distribution point for relief efforts in the affected communities.

These efforts reflect the Legion Family’s enduring commitment to standing together during times of hardship and ensuring that no Post or member faces disaster recovery alone.

Supporting Recovery Through Florida’s Disaster Relief Fund

The American Legion, Department of Florida, continues to provide assistance through its Disaster Relief Fund, established to help support Legion Posts, members, and communities impacted by natural disasters.

Contributions help the Department respond to emergencies by providing essential supplies, coordinating relief efforts, and supporting recovery where assistance is needed most.

Members, Posts, and supporters are encouraged to contribute, volunteer, or learn more about available disaster relief resources.

Additional Assistance Available Through the National Emergency Fund

The American Legion’s National Emergency Fund (NEF) provides another potential source of financial assistance for eligible Legionnaires, Sons of The American Legion members, and American Legion Posts impacted by declared natural disasters.

Eligible applicants may qualify for grants of up to:

  • $3,000 for individual members displaced from their primary residence.
  • $10,000 for American Legion Posts experiencing qualifying disaster-related damage that restricts their ability to conduct Legion programs.

NEF grants are intended to address immediate, essential needs following a disaster, including temporary housing, food, water, clothing, and other necessities. They are not intended to replace insurance coverage or reimburse structural repairs, vehicle damage, business losses, or other excluded expenses.

For Posts, assistance is limited to qualifying losses affecting programs associated with The American Legion’s Four Pillars. Losses involving social quarters or restaurant operations are not eligible.

Applicants must meet program requirements and provide the necessary documentation. All applications are subject to eligibility review and approval.
