Florida Legion Leaders Visit Patrick Space Force Base to Address Servicemember Needs
Department of Florida joins National American Legion delegation to identify opportunities for greater support and strengthen military community partnerships.
Representatives from The American Legion Department of Florida and National Headquarters visited Patrick Space Force Base in Cocoa Beach, Florida, September 23–24, 2026, to assess quality-of-life concerns affecting servicemembers and their families while identifying opportunities for additional support from local American Legion posts.
The visit was part of The American Legion’s Base Assessment and Servicemember Experience (BASE) program, an initiative designed to better understand the challenges facing military personnel and advocate for improvements in housing, healthcare, childcare, staffing, and other essential services.
Patrick Space Force Base, home to Space Launch Delta 45, plays a critical role in supporting launch operations at Cape Canaveral. Despite its expanding mission, base leadership identified staffing shortages and funding limitations as significant challenges affecting operations and support services.
Among the concerns discussed were medical staffing, pharmacy demands, and the increasing workload placed on the installation’s military honor guard.
Florida Legionnaires Ready to Answer the Call
Department of Florida Adjutant Kevin Mook emphasized the willingness of local American Legion posts to step in where additional assistance is needed, particularly in supporting servicemembers living in base dormitories and helping military honor guard teams provide funeral honors.
Mook identified opportunities for Legion posts to assist with rifle team details and ceremonial honors, helping ease the burden on military personnel while ensuring veterans receive the recognition they deserve.
The visit also highlighted the work already being accomplished by Florida Legionnaires. Several local American Legion posts regularly provide meals for spouses of deployed servicemembers, while the Department of Florida American Legion Riders purchase Christmas gifts for children whose parents are deployed.
These efforts demonstrate the Department’s ongoing commitment to supporting military families and maintaining strong connections between local posts and active-duty installations.
Department of Florida Second Vice Commander Rick Orzechowski, a Vietnam-era Air Force veteran, also participated in the visit. Reflecting on the changes in military life since his own service, Orzechowski praised the installation’s personnel for accomplishing demanding missions despite limited resources.
Strengthening Advocacy Through Personal Connections
Beyond identifying immediate needs, the BASE program provides The American Legion with firsthand information to strengthen its advocacy efforts at the national level.
The delegation also recognized several positive initiatives at Patrick Space Force Base, including resilience programs, STEM education opportunities, and transition assistance resources designed to support servicemembers and their families.
As Space Force operations continue to expand, maintaining adequate staffing, resources, and community partnerships will remain essential.
For the Department of Florida, the visit reinforced a simple but important message: supporting our military means being present, listening to their needs, and finding meaningful ways to help.
Through continued collaboration with military leadership, local posts, and the American Legion Riders, Florida Legionnaires remain committed to ensuring that those who serve—and the families standing beside them—know they have the support of The American Legion.
