My Fellow SAL Members,

This will be my last article, as my two year reign of terror is rapidly coming to a close. Our membership is at another ALL TIME HIGH. I want to thank all who have busted a gut to make this a reality. The Detachment gets the credit, but it is all of you who make it happen. You have given me two years of hard work and hospitality that cannot be equaled anywhere. I will never forget these past two years. It is my sincere desire that who ever follows me gets the same cooperation and dedication. I will always be available to the next Commander for what ever reason.

My homecoming is history and I would like to thank Ed Sheubrooks and Jim Roberts for the great job they did. Up next is Post and Squadron #38. A special thanks goes to Mike and Donna Dooley. The did a lot of ground work to make it a great success. Almost forgot Unit #38 for their hard work as well. My thanks to John and Bobbie Spisiak, for the use of their home when I attended the Department Commanders Homecoming. Even if I had to work around the Post again to earn my keep. Last but not least is Henry Clayton of Post #171. Thanks for having me for your Memorial Day Service. Great Job!

I do hope that all of you remembered to honor our brave men and women who gave all on Memorial Day. That is their day and we as AMERICANS should never forget the sacrifices they made so that we are free.

I will be attending the 8th and 13th District Constitutional Conferences. I will also be at Post #139, 148, and 104 at the end of June. After that is convention. Hope to see all of you there.

Once again, thank you for the past two years. They have truly been fantastic!!!

ADJUTANT'S CORNER

Gentlemen,

In just one short month, we will be meeting for our annual Detachment Convention. It is during this time that we conduct year-end business, make donations to our various programs, and elect new Detachment Officers to lead us in the upcoming year. With the major success that we have enjoyed over the past years, we must continue to elect qualified and dedicated members to prominent positions. If we do not succeed in doing this, then our membership and programs will be impeded. The success of next years programs is dependent on the election of competent Officers, not just on the District and Detachment, but in the Squadrons as well.

I have started receiving year- end reports in the mail from several Squadrons. My thanks to all that have submitted so far. For those of you that have not yet completed your reports, please do so today! It only takes a few minutes of your time. From these reports, we compile our figures for The American Legion on what we have accomplished during the year. In addition, there are several Awards that your Squadron could win. The winners are chosen from the year-end reports. Please remember that even if there was “NO ACTIVITY” at your Squadron last year, note this on the reports and submit them. Please do not forget the National Consolidated Squadron Report form as well. National Headquarters will not accept any other report forms this year. I am receiving some e-mails that not all of the Squadrons have received the National form. Please check with your Squadron Commander, and or the Post Adjutant to see if it was mailed to them. If not , I have a few extra being sent from National Headquarters and can forward them to you.

Our National Guest for the upcoming Detachment Convention will be National Commander Earl Ruttkofsky. Join us in showing National Commander Ruttkofsky what Southern Hospitality really is.

As Detachment Commander Davis stated, we made our 100% and another ALL TIME HIGH! However don’t stop now. Remember our goal is to reach 12,000 members by Convention. Come on guy’s, lets not disappoint Detachment Commander Davis. Our HARVEST has been great, lets make it superb.

We will be accepting donations for our various programs on the Convention floor. If your Squadron has a donation and will not be able to attend the Convention, please send the checks to me prior to the Convention and I will present them on your behalf.  Florida Special Olympics is dependent on our donations, as is the Children’s Miracle Network, and The Florida Children and Youth Fund. You have always answered the call, and I am sure you will not let us down this year. Have a safe trip to the Convention, and I will see you in Orlando!

SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Stanley Viergutz, Detachment Special Olympics Chairman

I want to thank the volunteers who helped out at the Spring Special Olympics Games in Tampa. It was a lot of work, but we had a great time. A special thanks to Department Commander George Wehrli and his wife Irma for joining my wife Bonnie and I in representing The American Legion Family at the Presidents Reception and the Opening Ceremonies. Please remember the Fall Games November 2nd and 3rd in Orlando. We need your help! Also keep in mind our convention coming up in just a few weeks. Please be as generous as you can with your donations for Florida Special Olympics. See you in Orlando!

ELECTIONS OF OFFICERS

All Squadrons and District Officers must be elected annually and certified to the Department Adjutant not more than 60 days nor less then 10 days prior to the annual Detachment Convention. The election of Squadron and District Officers this year must be held between April 5th and June 24th, 2007.

DELEGATE CUT-OFF

Delegate cut-off for Squadron voting for the Convention is June 20, 2007 at the close of business at Department Headquarters. A registration fee of $5.00 per delegate and alternate is hereby established. Squadrons will be allowed to cast voted on registered delegates and registered At-Large delegates only. If your Squadron has four votes and only registered two, then your Squadron may only cast the two delegate voted that have been registered. Forms for registration are in your Administrative Manual. Bring this with you to the Convention. Make all checks payable to The American Legion, Department of Florida.
