COMMANDER'S COLUMN
Mark Davis, Detachment Commander

My Fellow SAL Members,

I am happy to report that membership is going a little better. We have met our 75% goal ahead of time. We are currently at 8,717 members, or 77.81%. We are in 16th Place in the National Standings. However, there are still some Squadrons that are at ZERO. There is no reason for this. I had one District Commander go into a Squadron to find out about their membership. They were sitting on 62 paid cards that needed to be transmitted. This District Commander walked out of the post with the cards and a check in hand. This tells me that there are some Squadrons Officers that may not know what to do or are not interested in doing their job properly.

By the way, with the 62 cards that the District Commander picked up, plus their current membership of 15 members, it made them 100% in membership. I can just imagine others that are sitting on membership as well.  If anyone knows the whereabouts of my rake, please let me know. I am wondering where it is and hope that it is safe and sound.

Up coming travels include February 3rd, Squadron #323 for their Four Chaplains Service. February 16th – 19th, for the Northern Area Harvest. March 3rd, Post 72 for the National Commanders visit. March 29th – April 1st, for the Mulberry Gathering.

Gentlemen,

As Detachment Commander Davis stated, Membership is ahead of last year. That’s the good news! The bad is the fact that we still have “GOOSE EGG SQUDRONS”! Come on guys get with the program. If you are holding membership that has been paid, then you are in violation of  the Detachment Constitution. This could lead to having your Charter pulled. Certainly we do not want this to happen, so if there is a problem that we can help with, please let us know. We are here to help you.

In last month issue of “The Source”, I asked for feedback on a proposed Spring Conference. This was to take place at a Legion Post somewhere in the state. To date, I have not received any emails in regards to the Conference. Therefore we will not be scheduling one. Our next meeting will be at the Detachment Convention in July.

As discussed at the workshop during the Fall Conference, we will have the National Consolidated Squadron Report form to complete this year, in addition to the ones required by the Detachment. There are a limited number of these forms available. Each Detachment was sent only one for each Squadron. I have the forms in my possession at the current time. We will be mailing these forms, along with the Detachment forms to your Squadron sometime in April. Please use this time to gather your information together for completing these forms. It is so much easier to have a monthly log of your activities and volunteers put together, Then when it comes time to complete the required reports, you will have the information easily available to you. No National Awards will be awarded using any of the old forms. You must complete the National Consolidated Report Form to have any of your Squadrons work counted.

Please note that the cut-off for donations for the Child Welfare Foundation is approaching. The cut-off is May 31st into National Headquarters. It must be there on this date to be credited for this year. If your Squadron has a donation, either bring it to the Spring Conference, or mail it to me. I will be attending the Spring NEC meeting in May and will present the checks during the NEC meeting. Until next month!

Gentlemen,

Good Job! Our Area has reached our goal of 75% before February. Our area is now in 2nd Place by a few percentage points. We have the opportunity to reach our 100% goal by the beginning of March. All we need is a little more than 500 cards sent in. I know we can do this. Keep up the good work and get that membership turned in.

COMMENTS FROM THE CHAPLAIN
Herbert Swoope, Detachment Chaplain

hswoope@msn.com

Part of our job is simply to be…always attentive to what we are doing and what is going on inside us, at the same time we listen and pay attention to the people and events around us. Part of our job is to expect that. If we are attentive and willing, God will “give us prayer”, will give us the things we need, “our daily bread”, to heal and grow to love.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS
Stanley Viergutz, Chairman, Detachment Special Olympics Committee

It’s that time again! The Spring Special Olympics Games are fast approaching. Please plan to help us out in Tampa at the University of South Florida on Friday and Saturday, April 27th and 28th. As usual we are in charge of security. We need at least 30 volunteers. If you can help, please call me at home (904) 241-4030 or on my cell (904) 704-2871.

I have once again made arrangements at the Hampton Inn ¼ mile west of I-75 on Fletcher Ave. for those of you who need overnight accommodations. The rates are King Room $69.00 + tax or Suites (sleep 4) $99.00 + tax. To make a reservation call Kristi Porch ONLY! Tell her you are with the American Legion for Special Olympics. Her private # is (813) 903-6007. If she is not in leave a message. She will return your call. See you in Tampa!

CHILDREN'S MIRACLE NETWORK
Stanley Weyman, Chairman, Detachment Commander's Project Committee (CMN)

amipirate@aol.com

It’s been a long season, but here we are preparing for the new year for the Children’s Miracle Network. It seems that many Squadrons are presenting programs to their Post with the hope of raising funds for the CMN collection at Convention in July. Squadrons like #254 in Northport have scheduled their Backyard Bask again this year during the February 24th weekend. I hope that many can come support their efforts.

Also the Annual Telethon for the All Children’s Hospital has been scheduled for June 3, 2007, with the Sons appearance scheduled at 7:30am. If anyone can participate, please send your name, address, and phone number to me so I can make arrangements for the show. I have 16 seats to fill, but I can rotate participants so everyone can be involved.

Hoping to see you there in St. Pete and Orlando. By the way, if anyone is having a Fundraiser for the CMN or Children's Hospital, could you please inform me and I can get the information out to everyone.

DETACHMENT COMMANDER'S HOMECOMING

The Detachment Commanders Homecoming will be held on May 12th, 2007 at Post #38 in Fort Myers. More information will be available on this in the next month issue of The Source.
