On March 1, 2006, an American service member’s life changed forever. Staff Sgt. Jose Pequeño, a New Hampshire National Guard and former Marine, was stationed in Ar Ramdi, Iraq when he was ambushed by Iraqi insurgents. A grenade was launched into his Humvee. Pequeño was severely wounded by shrapnel which entered the lower rear portion of his brain.

Since that devastating day, his mother and sister have been by his side. He requires daily care. “Jose’s head injury is one of the most severe his neurosurgeon has ever seen, especially the most severe one that had ever survived this war.” his sister Elizabeth Bagley states. “At this point, Jose cannot walk, cannot talk, cannot eat, cannot drink and has not made consistent purposeful movements.” Currently, he is at a veterans rehab center in Tampa Florida.

After more than 2 years in several hospitals, Jose Pequeño is ready to go home. The American Legion of Florida is a participant of the Department of Defense program called Heroes to Hometowns. This program is raising money for heroes like Staff Sgt. Jose Pequeño. Currently The American Legion Department of Florida is working with his mother and sister to assist them in making necessary repairs for a handicap-accessible home in Tampa so they can continue to provide the best care possible in a home environment. To accomplish this goal, we also need help from you and the community.
