Message from the Director

Welcome to the internet portal of Florida’s Premier Youth Leadership Program…Florida American Legion Boys State. The American Legion, Department of Florida, under the leadership of Department Commander Paul Martel, serves more than 130,000 legionnaires. The information provided at this site will address many of your questions and concerns about the program.
We are looking forward to the 66th Session July 8-14, 2009 on the campus of Florida State University. This program is the quintessential leadership program for young men looking for a summer camp leadership experience that leaves them with a lifetime impression. Participants will have the opportunity to actively engage in the political process with more than 500 academically astute, politically savvy and leadership driven rising High School seniors throughout the State of Florida. Legionnaires and other volunteers will lead participants in creating the mythical 51st state.
A Boys State citizen is a representative of his parents, school, community and most of all, himself. Previous Boys State citizens have been afforded the opportunity to meet with the Governor, Cabinet Members, Legislators, Florida Supreme Court Justices, Florida State University Administration, and Military Academies to name a few. Being selected to attend Boys State will put you in the category of other individuals who have attended Boys State in Florida and other States. Your graduation from the program will place you in the ranks of Alumnus with Governor Charlie Crist, Former President Bill Clinton, Congressmen Trent Lott, Rush Limbaugh, Michael Jordan, Mike Huckabee, Tom Brokaw, Roger Ebert and Neil Armstrong to name a few.
Florida Boys State has some long held traditions that have sustained the program for many years. We show respect to the American Flag, we have daily non-sectarian prayers, and sing certain patriotic songs. The American Legion Creed, “For God and Country” is why we are dedicated to this youth leadership program.
It is my sincere desire that each Boys Stater will have an exceptional experience as we operate under this Administrations Three “E”s of Excellence: Educate, Enlighten and Empower!
